Follow-up photos: Kelton Ranch sinkhole floods, causing mile-long oil slickPress Release | Jun 01, 2026

Upton County, TX — Last week, heavy rains caused a Kelton Ranch sinkhole to overflow and create an oil slick covering the surrounding land. Sarah Stogner, district attorney of Texas’ 143rd Judicial District and a longtime advocate for accountability and proper oversight in the oil and gas industry, took photos of the sinkhole and the oil slick soon after the flooding.

Formed from a collapsed, poorly plugged oil and gas well in 1977, the Kelton Ranch sinkhole in Upton County, West Texas has grown to roughly 300 feet across and 60 feet deep, and continues to grow. The Railroad Commission has taken no significant action to stabilize the area despite decades of complaints and requests from local community members.
