The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is collecting public comments and hosting a virtual hearing on whether to grant primary authority over carbon injection projects to the Railroad Commission of Texas, the state oil and gas agency. If proper oversight of carbon injection projects is not maintained, underground sources of drinking water can be permanently contaminated with strong acids and harmful chemicals such as lead, arsenic, and more.
Your sign-on will generate a public comment to the EPA, urging them to reject the Railroad Commission’s application for carbon storage primacy. The EPA is accepting public comments until July 31, 2025.
Read the full sign-on letter here.
Region 6 EPA will hold a virtual public hearing on Thursday July 24th, 2025 from 5:00 pm CST until 8:00 pm CST. Each speaker will have three minutes to testify. Registration details are available on the EPA’s website. If you require the services of an interpreter or special accommodations such as audio description, please pre-register for the hearing and describe your needs by July 17th, 2025.
