A new nonprofit group focused on overhauling oversight of the Texas energy industry, reports abandoned oil and gas wells in the state pose a growing threat to the environment. Virginia Palacios is the executive director of Commission Shift. She says the Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates the oil and gas industry, is not plugging orphan wells quickly enough.

Virginia Palacios: The Railroad Commission recorded at the end of the last fiscal year about 6,200 orphan wells that they plan to eventually plug, but they only plug about 1,800 wells per year.

The abandoned wells can leak oil, gas, and other fluids into groundwater.
